an internationally active organic
association, one of the pioneers championing the development
of organic agriculture throughout the world. From the very beginning we focused not only on the organic but also on the social quality of our products. To Naturland, sustainability has meant, for almost 30 years now, accepting responsibility for people, animals and the environment. Since the founding of Naturland in 1982 the context of organic agriculture worldwide has changed positively overall, due in part to the influence of Naturland. Naturland took up new areas of activity within organic agriculture, carrying out pioneering work. The vision and goals of the early days of the organization are still relevant today, but new challenges and chances also demand new answers. This also necessitates reflection on Naturland's understanding of itself – as the foundation for further success. This understanding was formulated in a Naturland policy guidelines. Naturland’s farmers and processors work to the highest organic standards. Our standars are even more stringent than those of the German national eco label, Bio-Siegel. Naturland’s standards cover areas which are not dealt with in the EC Organic Directive, such as organic forestry management and social standards. The social standards, which came into effect in 2005, identify the social responsibility of all Naturland’s members. Organic agriculture according to our standards are based on a holistic system, oriented to look at the “whole body” of things. Partial conversion, which is permitted under the EU Organic Directive, is forbidden by Naturland. The high level of Naturland’s standards, for example where it applies to the purchase of fertilisers or feed (at least 50% of the feed must be produced on the farm itself) requires professional management skills of the farmers. The detailed processing standards for all fields of production are a logical sequel to the holistic perspective – the standards have to be complied with from production to the sale of the goods in the shop.
Naturland - Our three pillars of sustainability
Organic. Social. Fair. Organic
– more than a question of good taste!
As a consumer, first of all, you can enjoy the sense of security which this form of agriculture provides -which manages to do without genetic engineering, synthetic chemical pesticides and mineral fertilizers to produce top quality, healthy foodstuffs. Species-appropriate animal husbandry, the exclusion of many additives, the encouragement of local economies and the creation of further jobs are other good reasons to opt for organic produce. However, organic agriculture has its advantages even where it is not so obvious. Did you know that billions of tons of topsoil, which are crucial to our food production, are lost to erosion every year? Organic farmers preserve this valuable resource by interfering as little as possible with the natural equilibrium, and by fostering the formation of humus. And this is just one of many examples of how they tackle persistent problems in harmony with nature.
